Good information management is critical to running HMP Five Wells

HMP Five Wells is the UK’s largest Category C resettlement prison, located in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Built almost entirely from standardised components,  with a unique design that enables more contact between staff and prisoners, it came with its own set of complex information requirements. Main contractor Kier, working for the Ministry of Justice, identified that utilising a Common Data Environment (CDE) for stages 5-6 handover could significantly simplify asset management, and decided to employ gliderbim® as part of this project.

Building Information Management (BIM) was selected for this project due to its all-encompassing benefits. The use of a CDE allows for enhanced collaboration between internal teams, as well as between the internal team and construction teams, sub-contractors and suppliers. When information requirements are specified and handover delivered correctly, estate and operational asset/building users have an enhanced experience, and facilities management (FM) teams can complete their job more efficiently.

gliderbim® was deployed to verify deliverables across 13 buildings and sitewide, covering 68 major packages from 49 subcontractors, verifying over 380,000 COBie records (verifying 2.8 million data points) processing over 17,000 handover documents, and producing 437 O&M manuals and building user guides.

This level of digital handover will enable a soft landing for MOJ operations teams responsible for running the prison and the ability to navigate a structured, verified document and data set, as well as quicker on-boarding for the FM team. Moreover, the client is empowered with access to ‘useful’ maintainable asset data that can be used to drive insights and decisions through the operational title of the building. This project sets a blueprint for best practice and a standardised approach to digital delivery for the MOJ New Prisons Programme with learnings being rolled forward into HMP Fosse Way and HMP Full Sutton.
