A report prepared for the Department for Transport and the Infrastructure and Projects Authority,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/65f807b0af6a0d6b9b90d506\/crossrail-lessons-learned-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sponsoring a Major Project \u2013 The Crossrail Experience<\/a><\/em>, highlights nine <strong>lessons learned<\/strong> from what worked on the project &#8211; and what didn\u2019t. A key lesson was that a project sponsor\u2019s requirements should stipulate integrated digital asset management data in design and construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the inception of Crossrail, BIM was a \u201crelatively new way of collecting and integrating asset data when the sponsors\u2019 requirements were written\u201d. In particular, the report noted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere was a notable challenge on Crossrail associated with the <strong>poor definition of asset data and the asset data management processes<\/strong>. The significance of this became clearer as the time for testing and assurance relating to entry into service approached, when it was discovered that the contractors\u2019 data had inconsistencies and gaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany tests were repeated and the paper trail had to be recreated.
