nima to cease posting on ‘X’

nima is to cease active posting on X (formerly Twitter) due to declining engagement and the proliferation of misinformation.

Joining Twitter in May 2016 as @UKBIMAlliance, and later (October 2022) becoming @WeAreNima, the organisation grew a substantial following (6,000-plus), and posted over 3,200 updates from its main account on the platform. However, since a 2022 change in its ownership, X has – in nima’s view – deteriorated as a place for informed and professional interaction.

Like several other UK organisations (for example, the Guardian newspaper, Devon County Council, North Wales Police, and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations), nima has therefore decided to stop posting updates on X. nima vice-chair and communications lead Paul Wilkinson says:

“From late 2022, regular Twitter users experienced changes to the platform that impaired its functionality and increased the cost of using it. User moderation was also reduced, resulting in more unreliable content being shared, and more ‘trolling’. We noted declining levels of user engagement with our posts, and some followers were also abandoning the platform.

“In line with our focus on trusted, quality data, we have therefore decided to terminate nima’s engagement with and via X. We will switch our energies to activities and platforms that have seen significant recent growth.

Over the past two years, traffic to the nima website is up 38% year-on-year, and our LinkedIn audience has grown to over 10,000 followers. We have explored sharing content through video and podcasts, and our three virtual conferences have successfully attracted large live audiences. Over 400 people watched the online launch of the Information Management Initiative on 7 November, and we created rich content to make available on-demand.”

nima’s main X account will remain live and accessible to give access to historical content. However, website links to X are being removed.

nima plans to become more active on Instagram. Having resumed distribution of an e-newsletter (subscribe here) in September, nima has also started a Bluesky channel
