Information Management Initiative (IMI) – what and why

What is the information Management Initiative (IMI)?

Built environment organisations do not work in isolation. We have to continuously share information throughout the life of built and managed assets.

This applies to all organisations including asset managers, insurers, investors, trades, regulators, asset owners, facilities managers, designers, project managers, contractors…. Why? Because we all produce and use information.

Led by nima and supported by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC), the Information Management Initiative (IMI) aspires to become an industry-led and government-supported programme to progressively transform information management practices across the built and managed environment sector.

What the IMI will provide

1. Organisational support

  • The IMI is a call to action – it invites all organisations to sign up to some over-arching principles.
  • It sets out a sector-wide directive for organisations to assess their maturity.
  • It helps organisations to create an internal mandate that each organisation controls based on their maturity and ambition.

2. Information foundations

  • A standard information approach to establish information management foundations across the entire sector.

Why is this different from any other initiative? For the first time, we are actively working with the other key stakeholders across the sector to sort this out once and for all!

Towards a standard information approach

Organisations don’t operate as silos. We all work together in different combinations throughout the life of built assets. We therefore need a common foundation to enable us to share information.

Currently we are all trying to solve the same information-related problems. This spreads out resource, funding and effectiveness. We need a standard information approach.

Towards a common approach

Information foundations

We have numerous standards and guidelines. The IMI aim is to assist organisations by reducing some of the complexity and effort involved in implementation by offering a standardised information approach.

Developing a standard information approach is ambitious but essential for our future. We’ve streamlined it into targeted technical projects to drive it forward.

Why support the IMI

Why is this different to the many other initiatives? We are joining the dots. Our aim is to coordinate the people and work already underway around a bigger picture. This will give a clear direction and the efforts will join together.

Let’s solve it once, solve it well, and make sure it fits into a “bigger picture”.

Organisations are invited to sign up to the IMI principles, create their own internal mandates, and help to transform information management practices across the built and natural environment.
