IMI – the Information Management Initiative
The Information Management Initiative (IMI) aims to progressively transform information and data management practices across the built and natural environment. Led by the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) and supported by nima, it is intended to improve industry productivity through better information and data management:
- cutting costs
- saving time
- improving quality, and
- delivering better value across the life cycle of built and managed assets.

The IMI process
In brief (find out more here and in the FAQs), the IMI:
- sets out a sector-wide directive to industry, including some over-arching principles and a route-map forward
- invites organisations to sign up to the principles:
- Recognise the whole life purpose of information and data.
- Upskill people in information management.
- Take a common, consistent and data-centric approach.
- Establish clear data and information governance principles.
- requires organisations to create an organisation-wide mandate, encompassing some over-arching rules and setting out desired outcomes, and
- will provide a framework and resources to support organisations in applying role-specific rules, standards and guidance.
Through the IMI, the CLC wants to build sector-transforming capabilities in applying emerging digital technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT) and ‘digital twins’.
The IMI needs your support
Achieving sector-wide change demands a sustained programme financed and supported by industry. Organisations are invited to become signatories and founding sponsors to help promote the IMI and support the improvement projects it will deliver.
Sign up to the IMI principles, and get support to create your own organisation-specific information management mandate.
