IMI endorsed by BIM4Rail

BIM4Rail, comprising key information management practitioners in the rail sector, has endorsed the aims and objectives of the Information Management Initiative (IMI), launched by nima and the Construction Leadership Council in November 2024 (news).

The BIM4Rail group is comprised of key individuals who have been implementing and leading BIM (building information modelling) and information management best practices for both client and supplier organisations in the UK Rail sector.

The UK Government Construction Strategy 2011 introduced fully collaborative BIM as a minimum requirement for all government clients by 2016. This was followed by the release of PAS1192-2:2013 defining the framework; roles and responsibilities; and process for fully collaborative BIM. The 1192 series increased to six parts that went on to inform the international ISO19650 series which has now fully replaced them.

The IPA’s Transforming Infrastructure Performance: Roadmap to 2030 introduced an updated IM Mandate in 2021 replacing the BIM Mandate 2016. The UK Government IM Mandate has been embraced and is being advanced by nima with the Information Management Initiative Framework (formerly the UK BIM Framework).

Chair of the BIM4Rail group Ian Chambard says:

“As a group, BIM4Rail endorses the aims and objectives of the Information Management Initiative (IMI). The group would urge rail clients and supply chains to engage with and sign up to the IMI, and in doing so, realise the benefits to their organisations and demonstrate their commitment to improving information management for the natural and built environment of the railway infrastructure.”
