About us: what we do

Nima promotes information management best practices, helping to support digital transformation across the built and managed environment. It is a not-for-profit, virtual, volunteer-led organisation committed to better information and data management. This:

  • saves time – you get the right information in the right form at the right time
  • cuts costs – makes your information more findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable
  • improves quality – your data is assured and reliable, and retains its long-term value.

Established as the UK BIM Alliance in 2016 (see history), nima incorporates bSUKI, the UK and Ireland chapter of buildingSMART International, and a not-for-profit consultancy, the GIIG.

With the British Standards Institution, nima maintains the IMI Framework (formerly the UK BIM Framework), the overarching approach to implementing BIM in the UK and a repository of guidance on data and information management best practices.

And in partnership with the Construction Leadership Council, it is developing the Information Management Initiative (IMI).

How we are organised

Nima activities are managed through various volunteer groupings, including:

  • networks – groups of volunteers active in particular industry disciplines or in particular regions
  • affiliated organisations – professional institutions and industry trade associations aligned with nima’s aims of better information management
  • ambassadors – individuals who promote nima, the UK BIM Framework and the standards and resources that support and enable it
  • nima’s chair and vice-chairs – individuals who volunteer considerable time and expertise to help manage nima activities

And we gratefully acknowledge the practical support and financial backing given to nima by its many supporters and patrons (some of whom also contribute to nima’s Technology Group).
