A buildingSMART Implementers update

nima vice chair Emma Hooper recently attended the buildingSMART General Assembly of Implementers meeting at Trimble’s headquarters in Denver, Colorado.

The event is focused on the software implementation of buildingSMART standards and services within software. There were discussions around the buildingSMART Data Dictionary (bSDD) and Information Delivery Specification (IDS). There was also discussion around the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) validation service and software certification. The focus of the second day was on IFC 5 developments. These developments are highly significant as there is going to be a complete change of data architecture to modernise the schema. There were demos and discussion around utilising the Entity Component System (ECS) and Universal Scene Description (USD) data structures.

From nima’s perspective, it is important that IFC is updated for future technology implementation, but it is also critical that it supports data-driven information management workflows within organisations and projects.
